Autism spectrum disorder or ASD is the most common developmental disorder today. With 1 in 68 kids being diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, dentists will be treating these patients more frequently. As these patients outgrow the pediatric dentist, the general dentist will be responsible for providing treatment for this unique and often challenging population. This course will explain the core characteristics of ASD and how these can both positively and negatively affect dental treatment.
Learning Objectives:
• Identify the core characteristics of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
• Understand how the variability of these characteristics may affect dental treatment
• Develop strategies to aid in dental treatment of patients with ASD.
Course Curriculum
Danielle Green, DMD
Danielle Green, DMD completed a master’s level course in Applied Behavior Analysis through the May Institute in Boston and has been in private practice for over 25 years. ABA is a method of instruction utilizing B.F. Skinner’s principles of behavior modification. This therapy has been scientifically proven to be effective in teaching skills to many individuals on the spectrum. For 12 years, Dr. Green has facilitated a support group for parents and caregivers of autistic individuals in southeastern Connecticut. Dr. Green herself is a parent of a son with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
