Staying Prepared: Emergencies in the Dental Office
This course, designed for dental practitioners and their teams, emphasizes the critical importance of emergency preparedness in the dental setting. Participants will learn to identify at-risk patients through thorough screening and determine strategies to reduce risk by anticipating potential problems. The course covers the effective use, maintenance, and management of emergency kits and equipment. A key component will be preparing the dental team through scenario-based emergency drills that focus on both common medical and dental-specific emergencies. Attendees will review the recognition of signs and symptoms during emergencies, along with protocols for effective management. Additionally, the course will highlight the importance of accurate documentation in the event of an emergency.
Learning Objectives:
- Assess at-risk patients through vital signs and medical history review to proactively reduce the likelihood of emergencies.
- Review essential emergency equipment and demonstrate proper use and maintenance of emergency equipment, including AEDs and oxygen tanks.
- Develop and practice emergency protocols through scenario-based drills, focusing on both medical and dental-specific emergencies, to ensure efficient team response.
- Identify common medical and dental emergencies that may occur in a dental office and recognize their signs and symptoms.
- Implement clear communication and team roles during an emergency and understand the importance of timely documentation in emergency situations.

Paul M. Ciuci, DMD, MD, FACS
Dr. Ciuci is a practicing Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at Milford & Derby OMFS, a Joint Commission Accredited surgery office in Milford, Connecticut. He is a member of the oral surgery faculty at Yale New Haven Health, serving on the admissions committee, clinical competency committee, and as course director of Simulated Anesthesia Emergencies. An oral board examiner and Director for the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Ciuci serves on the ADA’s Committee on Dental Education & Licensure; Subcommittee on Anesthesia, and AAOMS’ Committee on Continuing Education & Professional Development. He completed oral & maxillofacial surgery training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.
